The audio at 24-bit using 7.1 DTS Master Audio for a prefect reproduction
BLU RAY does what DVD-Audio and SACD could not.... Blu Ray becomes the
media thru which 24/96+ mutichannel audio becomes successful. For all
of the people who really love music, Blu Ray audio - the best format.
Blu Ray audio is the first format that would be unified for music. The
nice part is that Sony is behind Blu Ray, so they can give up on
pushing SACD, and push Blu Ray audio instead.
DD True HD for music in 24/96, up to 8 channels... The nice part about
the Blu Ray spec is that it can provide 8 channels of uncompressed
24/96 PCM. One advantage of that is that for independant and small
studios: they don't have to pay royalties to Dolby or DTS... They can
just do 24/96 LPCM up to 8 channels if they wanted...
lossless compression - it doesn't affect quality.
Blu Ray Audio is a great thing!!!
Audiophiles request to incorporate
Straight LPCM (2.0 or 5.1-7.1) for BD-audio
Consider 24/192 for 2 channel, and 24/96 for multichannel
Automatic startup on insert would be nice
I think it should incorporate a menu system for those discs that may
want to incorporate "extras" such as associated music videos, publicity
shots, Bonus View, etc. Hard core audiophiles may not want them, but
hey, these sorts of things sell discs to the general public.
Minimize any confusion on a BD "Profile 3.0". It's just simply gotta play on all BD players (especially the PS3).
If successful, I think there would eventually be a limited market for
BD Profile 3.0 players for those audio enthusiasts who want it, but I
think the initial efforts should be made to sell BD audio as HD audio on
all BD players (the PS3 particularly).
Much as the PS3 was used as a "Trojan Horse" to get BD players out
there, marketing should use it similarly to get the idea of "BD/HD
Audio" out there.
I think any new audio format has got to go for the gusto and try to
replace CD. If you shoot for just a niche product for just audiophiles,
you'll end up with SACD/DVDA all over again. Just a bunch of limited
releases for Jazz/Classical material and some very limited releases in
rock/etc. I want all my music in something other than CD. With
the way CD sales are going, you could really sell this to industry as a
way of reviving packaged media sales. Now, people who are satisfied
with digital downloads onto their iPods will be a lost cause for this.
But people who are a bit more discerning on music quality may bite on
an "HD Audio" concept.
Incorporating a "digital copy" for iPods may also be a good idea.
Again, J6P is gonna want this, and you need to get this to sell to that
demographic in some reasonable numbers to get this to fly.
BD-audio is the last, best chance to get a decent high res audio-only format out there to replace CD.
A "BD Profile 3.0" setup is absolutely UNNECESSARY.
As many of you you know, Blu-ray spec also has a third profile for just
audio content. The difference between this profile and the BonusView
(Profile v1.1) and BD-Live (Profile 2.0) profiles is that it allows the
disc to automatically start playing without any visual navigation
required.
Profile 3.0 would just use existing codecs to store sound more like a CD
- as individual tracks which would start playing immediately.
While high definition audio is not a new idea, the war between DVD-A and
SACD effectively killed the formats, preventing them from becoming
mainstream
The Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats can deliver anything that DVD-A could deliver and do so using current player models that can decode or output those formats.
Audio on Blu-ray could serve every purpose of music listening. The
master quality audio would be perfect for any home stereo setup, no
matter how high-end it may be. BD Live features would allow portable
versions of the music to be offloaded to a flash drive attached to the
player. Those files could then be loaded directly into portable music
devices or put onto a computer for the audio to be burned onto standard
CD-R discs.
